Dr. Joycelyn Elders broke barriers, made waves as first African American U.S. surgeon general

Not only did Dr. Joycelyn Elders, the first African American and second woman to serve as U.S. surgeon general, have no plans to become a physician when she became the first person in her family to attend college, at the time she had never even seen a doctor before.
